Puhaka

The puhaka is a traditional ceremony of the peoples of the Marquesas Islands. The Marquesas are located in the eastern portion of South Pacific and are part of French Polynesia.

This photo and video were taken at the Polynesian Cultural Center located on the North Shore of Oahu in Laie, Hawaii. The PCC, as it is known, features the culture of Polynesia displayed in seven island villages: Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

The Marquesas Island village was unfortunately shut after the 2008 recession so the music and dance that was exhibited there is no longer available. For anyone who experienced the puhaka, it had a unique sound combined with a rhythmic dance.
